FAQ's

Open MRI Design: best suited for patients with anxiety or claustrophobia, disabilities, etc.

What is an MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an advanced diagnostic tool used by radiologists to visualize areas of the body that are not typically visible using other types of imaging. The MRI scanner uses a powerful magnetic field to obtain an image inside the body. The magnetic fields used in MRI have attractive forces that are many times that of a hand-held magnet. A specially designed computer creates clear and precise images to help with the diagnosis. For some MRI scans, a contrast (dye) injection may be necessary to highlight certain tissues for closer examination. MRI exams do not involve X-rays or radioactive material.

What is an "Open" MRI?

An "Open" MRI (or large patient opening MRI) is a specially designed MRI for patients who are claustrophobic, larger in build or who just prefer a more relaxed and comfortable experience during their MRI examination.

What can I expect during my MRI exam?

During the MRI examination, you will lie as still as possible within the magnet while the test is performed.  The more still you are, the clearer the image will be.  The test should last approximately 30 minutes.  You will hear a "clicking" or "tapping" type sound during the test - this is normal.  Because this is an "Open" MRI, you will be not fully enclosed, therefore you will feel more comfortable during your MRI scan.

How do I prepare for an MRI?

For most scans, there are no special preparations, though please be aware of the following:

* If you are having an abdominal or pelvic MRI, please don’t eat for 3 hours prior the scan and drink water only to swallow medications.

* Do not wear metal or jewelry.

* Let your doctor know if you have any implants, especially:
          – Pacemaker or cardiac defibrillator
          – Brain aneurysm
          – Cardiac stent
          –  Stimulators
          – Metal in your eye

* Notify us in advance if you have renal (kidney) disease.
* If you are or may be pregnant, tell your physician.
* You will be asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment.
* If you must cancel or reschedule, please call us at least 24 hours before your appointment.
